Relay for LED Turn Signals
Replacing turn signals on a motorcycle is one of the most popular modifications out there. Even today, many manufacturers, including premium ones like Harley-Davidson, still use bulb-based turn signals. These have several drawbacks: they’re dim, consume a lot of power, and require bulky housings with reflectors for the bulbs.
The best replacement for stock turn signals? LED alternatives. They’re compact, much brighter, and consume significantly less energy.
For our XSR125, we chose the German-made Kellermann Rombus turn signals with a classic diamond-shaped design and a matte aluminum body. These ultra-bright LED signals are certified for all types of vehicles, including cars and trailers. Powerful LEDs are controlled by a built-in microchip (Longlife Protection Guard®, IC operated) that ensures optimal performance and long service life.
The turn signal housing attaches to the bolt via a rubber cushion that dampens vibrations. If the cushion gets damaged, Kellermann sells it separately, and a rigid mount is also available. Both spare parts are offered in our store.
An interesting observation: the shape of the Kellermann Rombus closely resembles Yamaha’s original turn signals, but in a more compact and asymmetric form. Yamaha’s turn signals are arguably some of the most aesthetic stock signals, with geometrically intricate shapes and elegant lines.
With the original relay, LED turn signals blink at a higher frequency because they have lower resistance. While this doesn’t compromise safety, for those who want to do it right, the best solution is to install a digital relay. Additionally, on some motorcycles, turn signals stay on constantly when activated, making relay replacement necessary.
In our opinion, the best solution is the Motogadget mo.stop digital relay. It offers various operating modes, works with both turn signals and brake lights, and is compact, water-resistant, and vibration-proof.
We recommend this relay because it includes various features including an automatic shut-off mode after 20 seconds. This automatic shut-off mode is perfect for motorcycles with push-button turn signal controls. On motorcycles with a joystick on the left control panel, you’ll need to deactivate the turn signal by pressing the joystick before switching it back on in the same direction.
The smooth fade-out and fade-in modes also work great with light bulbs. With extremely bright turn signals, this mode is not so good, because even in the fading phase, such turn signals shine brightly and seem not to turn off. This is clearly visible in the video! That is why it is important that the relay has a standard operating mode with instant on/off.
For brake lights, the relay has highly noticeable light signaling modes, although they aren’t certified for public roads. Installing the Motogadget relay into the brake light power wire is a quick and effective solution.
For connecting turn signals, we’ve been using Posi Lock connectors for a long time. This is a reliable compact solution that allows you to quickly disconnect the wires for repairs or replacement.
